Experts are expensive! (or are they?)

Have you ever made this mistake?

“Paying someone to do this is too expensive; I can do it cheaper myself”

That may be true for a simple meal at home, or even your oil change if you are mechanically inclined, but as life and technology become more complex, it can be a costly error.

I still recall looking under the hood of a new (to me) car and realizing that my days of knowing how it worked, and how to maintain it, were over. And that was over 25 years ago!

If you want a laugh (or a cry) try googling “Pinterest fails” or “Nailed it” to see how others have taken this mistake to extremes.

I have recently identified several areas where I must be honest with myself and admit that DIY is not working. A case in point is social media marketing for my business. I have always seen that as a free sideline to be handled myself, but recently I recognized that the return on investment of that approach is the same as the investment made: ZERO!

So, I reached out to a new friend who specializes in marketing online, and paid him to help me. It was a significant investment for me, but already it is bearing fruit. New business comes to those who invest in seeking new business!

Expertise is worth paying for.

So, how is your communication ROI? Are you still hitting the same issues because you’ve invested too little in changing the narrative? Are there lessons you can only learn by inviting someone else to help you?

Expertise is usually priced by the amount of experience required to generate it. By that measure, I’m undercharging dramatically! Why not take advantage of that?
